Harley Davidson released a Service Bulletin addressing concerns of this issue. Now, these as I have looked it over, are ways to address the vibration and possibly take some vibration issues away or make it less noticable but in now way cures the condition per se. More a laundry list of ideas that could help in dealing with the vibration. To start, I drive a 2000 Softail. Stock motor (88' Twin Cam), with just about 7200 miles on it. I have installed an aftermarket air cleaner, exhaust, and a dynojet kit w/ the thunderslide. Grab the tire at about 3 and 9 o'clock and see how much 'twist' you have that would indicate the swing arm bushings may be shot. This is not easy and will only show you if the problem is real bad. You would also have a pretty scary ride if this was the case.If all those things check out OK, then I am afraid you will have to check for runout on the crank (at the pinion shaft inside the cam chest, and at the drive shaft inside the Primary). I would not start here, but rather eliminate all the easy stuff outside the engine first. If it is runout, you are in for a pretty big job.

You might consider the HD Reman program if this is the case.TQ.

2000

To start, I drive a 2000 Softail. Stock motor (88' Twin Cam), with just about 7200 miles on it.

I have installed an aftermarket air cleaner, exhaust, and a dynojet kit w/ the thunderslide.Problem: After a long ride on Saturday, I noticed an excessive buzzing when I hit the higher RPMs, just before shifting to the next gear. It's hard to pinpoint the source of the vibration, but I hear it from the north of the bike, either from the engine or above it, and in front of my body.I did some searches, and couldn't find a situation quite like mine. Seems others have issues with new vibrations after doing some engine work: new cams, head work, etc. I haven't done any of that.I went around and examined various bolts and such, to see if anything was loose, but couldn't right-away notice anything.

The bike has relatively low miles, 7200 miles, so it's hard to assume the bike is suffering from the sort of wear you get after a bit more age and use.Anyone have any tips on where to look? For what it's worth, over the past week I have installed a new headlight, mirrors, and removed/reinstalled the carb (double checking on the jets and needle installation.thought I was running too lean.). Two weeks prior I had installed new exhaust, the V&H Big Shots.Any tips or guidance is welcome! Make sure that new air cleaner is nice and tight. Also check to make sure any sheet metal on the air cleaner isn't vibrating and tapping something else like a fuel filter. Also if you have an external fuel filter, make sure its not vibrating on something else like a fin on a cylinder. It sounds like something sheet metal first, and could be your headlight bucket, as the rivets on those eventually can come loose, or it could be a toggle switch or ignition switch coming loose.

Harley Vibration Problems

It might be your dashboard vibrating on the gas tank. Make sure the speedometer is snug in the dashboard. These are the places I would look first. Another thing that can happen is the clutch lever for front brake lever can vibrate. Check your shifter and brake linkage. If anything is loose it might vibrate.

If there is a belt shroud on the back noise can radiate through the frame and be magnified by the gas tanks. There are all kinds of things it could be, but most likely you are right and something is coming loose or vibrating against something that has never touched it before. Anything that is really close to a piece of sheet metal can touch it when the engine is vibrating.
